About Cabo San Lucas in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas (commonly referred to as "Cabo") is a city located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. It has the sea of Cortez on one shore and the Pacific Ocean on the other. It is named for the slender cape extending eastward from Baja’s southernmost tip.

Cabo San Lucas is rated as one of the top tourist destinations in Mexico and a very popular destination for Hollywood's movie stars. It is known for its beaches, scuba diving locations, swim parks, the sea arch and marine life. It is quickly becoming a high end holiday destination with a number of resorts and timeshare clubs appearing along it's coast line.

The history of Cabo San Lucas

During the Spanish colonial era, Cabo's natural harbor was periodically used by passing mariners but due to its lack of fresh water and very little protection during the late summer storm season it was largely ignored by the Spanish. English pirates however did like to use the harbor as a hiding place for attacks.

By the 1930’s a small fishing village and cannery occupied the north end of the Cabo San Lucas harbor, inhabited by approximately 400 people. The cape begin to get very popular with sport fishermen in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Fly-in fishermen and wealthy pleasure boaters brought home exciting stories of Cabo which fueled the population growth to 1,500 people.

Following the completion of the Transpeninsular highway in 1973 which linked North America to Cabo San Lucas the town changed from a fly-in and sail-in resort to an automobile and RV destination. Today Cabo San Lucas is currently the seventh most popular destination in Mexico and the second fastest growing resort community in the country. With a permanent population of only 40,000 the tourist to resident ratio is quite high.
