About La Bufadora in the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja California, Mexico

Picture
La Bufadora is a marine geyser also known as a Blowhole that is located on the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja California, Mexico. The marine water spouts approximately every minutes or so and is varying degrees of water.  This happens when ocean waves and ari are drawn into an underwater cave located in the cliffside, and the trapped air and water then explode upwards.  When this happens it not only creates and upward spout but a loud thunderous noise as well.
La Bufadora is the second largest blowhole in the world and can shoot water upwards as high as 80 feet above sea level.

La Bufadora history

In English La Bufadora translates as “The Blowhole”. The name comes from local legend surrounding the marine geyser’s origin.  The tale says that a baby whale entering the underwater cave over a century ago became stuck.  The spout of water is from the now grown whales blowhole.

La Bufadora tourism

La Bufadora has regular tourists that are visiting Ensenada which is located 20 miles from the attraction. The area has numerous restaurants, souvenir shops, a dive shop and a recently added museum. While visiting you can board a boat and take a tour of the Sea of Cortes reliving the story of the little whale who created the blowhole. After you are done seeing this wonderful attraction and eating some of the delicious food tour the local shops where you will be able to buy beautiful handmade crafts and then watch the street performers sketch on flat dishes or abalone shells.
