Taxco de Alarcón (typically referred to as only “Taxco”) is a former silver-mining town from the Spanish colonial area. Taxco is in the heart of the northern part of the state of Guerrero. Located on the beautiful mountain region of the western part of the Sierra Madre del Sur, gives it a very pleasant climate. From a GPS perspective, Taxco is only about 150 miles southwest of Mexico City. The city is smaller with less than 100,000 habitants and but is considered the 5th largest city in the state of Guerrero.

Taxco has the traditional cobblestone streets for walking and has preserved the traditional white houses with red-tiled roofs giving it a very consistent look and feel.  It is a considred one of the magical towns of Mexico.

History of Taxco de Alarcon

Taxco predates the European conquest and has a history back to the foundation of the Aztecs who called the city “Tlacho” with a definition of “the place of the ballgame.”  During the Spanish times and during 1524 Hernán Cortés mined this location for tin used in the production of his artillery.

Taxco city was officially incorporated in 1532 according to records available in the “Court of Letters” which is Taxco's first-known public registry. It is known that early governments of this city made fortunes from the rich silver mines of this area, so fortune that others took notice such as a French prospector Joseph de la Borda who also discovered this rich silver deposit. Back then and today, Taxco is considered the “World's Capital of Silver” and today has hundreds of shops and world renowned silver jewelers. Silver is still considered the most important economic factor of Taxco’s economy.
