Guaymas is a port city in the Mexican state of Sonora. It stands on a small bay on the Gulf of California. Guaymas sprawls over several towns in between rocky outcroppings. The central part of Guaymas is a natural harbor which is completely ringed by beautiful rock cliff formations, beaches and the Sea of Cortes.

Traveling to Guaymas is easy as you can fly directly into Guaymas from Phoenix which makes this location easily accessible to many.

Guaymas's brief history

Before the arrival of the Europeans to Mexico the area known as Guaymas was occupied by the Guaymas, Seri and Yaqui tribes. In the late 18th and 19th century there was only one inhabitant in the Guaymas who was called Tio Pepe. Tio Pepe was said to be a drunk and a thief. At the beginning of the 19th century the village started to be populated by farmers and ranchers. They held large properties but there were no markets for their products. In 1811 commercial maritime traffic was authorized and customs were established in 1823. Ships visited the bay intermittently and it was also safer to travel by boat than by land at the time. Guaymas became an important stopping point for those traveling north or south western Mexico. By 1890 the city had 10,000 residents and was relatively prosperous. The carnival traditions that were established during this era are still held today. The first modern port facilities were built in 1925 for the Mexican navy. In 1942 a commercial pier and warehouse were built. Guaymas importance as a port grew during this time. Ferry connection with the city of Santa Rosalia Baja California was established in 1972. In 1980 a number of private construction projects which further enlarged the port began and have helped make the town even more prosperous. By 2005 the population of Guaymas had risen to approximately 134,000 residents.
